Dakota Dental Joins MDA In Providing Free Dental Care For Kids February 3rd

apple valley kids dentistApple Valley dentists, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, will participate again this year in the Minnesota Dental Association’s Give Kids A Smile program to be held February 3, 2012.

In its 10th consecutive year, the Give Kids A Smile program provides children from financially challenged families with needed dental work. Along with providing important dental services to those unable to afford it, the Give Kids A Smile program is effective in raising awareness of the challenges that disadvantaged families face in providing their children with needed dental care.

Services that the Dakota Dental team will donate for this charitable outreach program will vary from preventative oral health care, fluoride treatments, cleanings and sealants to restorative services such as fillings.

“Our Dakota Dental Clinic is honored to join with the Minnesota Dental Association and dentists across the state to make vital dental services available for every child.” said Dr. Wakefield. “Tooth decay is a serious problem – considered to be the most common chronic childhood disease, affecting 50% of first graders in the United States. Sadly, it’s estimated that over 52 million school hours are missed annually due to oral health issues related to tooth decay.”

Along with providing dental services for the Give Kids A Smile program, Dr. Wakefield and Dr. Isabella speak to schools, parenting and church groups and other organizations within the community to advocate for proper oral health care and wellness.

Individuals interested in receiving free dental services through the Give Kids A smile program should be 18 years or younger and need to have a parent or legal guardian accompany them. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling the Dakota Dental Apple Valley Dental Clinic at 952-431-5774.

Dakota Dental Apple Valley Family Dentistry serves the southern Minneapolis/Saint Paul suburbs. Located in the Pennock Professional Building in Apple Valley, Minnesota, Dakota Dental Center provides comprehensive dental work including, but not limited to, preventative dental services, restorative dental procedures, dental implants, periodontal disease treatment, dentistry for kids, low anxiety dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign and dental emergency services.

Connection Between Proper Dental Care and Overall Good Health

Apple Valley dentists, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, along with the staff at the Dakota Dental Apple Valley Dental Clinic, are reminding the community of the significance between oral hygiene and proper dental procedures and an individual’s overall physical health.

Untreated dental problems such as gum disease can contribute to various diseases and conditions. By allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream, gum disease can cause an infection in other parts of the body including the inner lining of the heart – a condition called endocarditis. Research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke may all be linked to oral bacteria, possibly due to chronic inflammation from periodontitis — a severe form of gum disease. Gum disease in women has also been connected to premature birth and low birth weight. Research is also suggesting an association between poor oral health and diabetes, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease as well.

“Routine oral hygiene and preventative dental services are important on so many levels,” says Dr. Shelley Wakefield. “Good oral health enables individuals to eat in a healthy manner, speak properly, avoid painful dental and oral health problems, look good, feel confident about their appearance and also promotes overall good physical health. Good oral health is vital to an individual’s overall well-being and is very achievable with personal oral care and general dental services.”

The Dakota Dental Apple Valley Dental Clinic suggests the following to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease which can lead to more serious health problems: brush and floss well and regularly, replace your toothbrush every three to four months, eat a healthy diet with limited snacks and schedule routine dental services to prevent oral disease.

Dr. Shelly Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella speak to school, scouting, parenting, and church groups and other organizations to promote an understanding of the importance of good oral health and wellness.

Dakota Dental Clinic Encourages Athletes To Wear Well-Fitted Mouth Guards To Prevent Dental Injuries

With fall sports in full swing, Dakota Dental Family Dentistry is reminding parents and athletes that dental injuries are one of the most common types of injuries sustained by participants in organized and recreational sports.

Sports related dental injuries often result in bruised or lacerated lips, cheeks and tongue, fractured or dislocated jaw and broken, shifted or lost teeth.

Apple Valley Dentist, Dr. Shelley Wakefield, notes that “Fortunately dental injuries are one of the most preventable types of sports-related injuries. Consistently wearing a properly fitted mouth guard can eliminate or greatly reduce the severity of a dental injury. A simple rule of thumb is if a sport requires any type of protective equipment to be worn, a mouth guard should be included as well – for both practice and game time.”

The Dakota Dental Center emphasizes that a properly fitted mouth guard is especially essential for individuals who wear braces or have fixed bridge dental work. A blow to the face can damage dental work or other fixed orthodontic appliances. A mouth guard also provides a barrier between dental braces and the cheek or lips, limiting the risk of soft tissue injuries.

To proactively prevent dental and oral injuries, Apple Valley dentists, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, are available to provide information in helping parents and athletes understand the different types of mouth guards and their varying degrees of protection. Stock mouth guards are convenient, come pre-formed and ready to wear, but often don’t fit well making breathing and talking difficult and offer reduced protection. Boil and bite mouth guards offer a better fit than stock mouth guards because they’re softened in water and inserted to adapt to the shape of the individual’s mouth. This fitting process is important and needs to be done with precision and care to ensure proper fit and protection.

Dakota Dental Family Dentistry can provide athletes with custom-fitted mouth protectors that precisely fit an individual and offer the most thorough mouth protection to prevent dental and oral injuries. Dakota Dental also provides emergency dentistry services in the event of an injury.

Individuals can contact Dakota Dental Family Dentistry for more information at 952-431-5774 or swakefield@dakotadental.com.

Dakota Dental Clinic Provides Dental Benefit Program for Seniors

As a cost effective alternative to conventional dental insurance, Dakota Dental Family Dentistry is offering a Senior Dental Benefit Program for individuals who are 62 years of age or older. This Senior Dental Benefit Program provides extensive preventative dental services along with additional benefits for one low annual fee.

Upholding the importance of good dental services and their effect on overall health, Dakota Dental Apple Valley Dentistry would like seniors to be aware of their unique oral health concerns. Tooth root decay develops more quickly as individual’s age. Frequent fluoride treatments minimize this risk along with tooth cavities. Because the natural cleansing process of salivary production slows down later in life, plaque build-up increases and makes routine cleanings and dental procedures even more important. Professional dental cleanings also help to prevent periodontal disease or bone loss which is the leading cause of tooth loss in older adults.

To maintain good oral and general health while preventing damage to teeth and the need for more costly dental procedures later on, Dakota Dental Clinic’s low cost Senior Dental Benefit Program provides $514 worth of annual preventive dental services for a low annual program fee of $299 – a savings of $215.

Dakota Dental’s Senior Dental Benefit Program includes two exams, two professional cleanings, two fluoride treatments, up to four x-rays per year and a $98 credit towards periodontal prophy. Participants also receive 15% off needed restorations and dental procedures including tooth colored fillings, crowns and bridges, periodontal procedures, teeth whitening, dentures, full mouth x-rays, dental implants and denture stabilization.

Apple Valley dentists, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, are reminding the community that oral health affects an individual’s entire life. Good nutrition, clear speech and a pleasant appearance are important to physical and mental well being and depend on healthy teeth and gums. With routine, professional dental services, it is possible to enjoy a high quality of life and keep your teeth for a lifetime.

Additionally, Dakota Dental Family Dentistry would like to gently remind those with dentures that a dentist is the only one qualified to provide denture services. Professional training enables a dentist to evaluate an individual’s total oral health and its relationship to general health. In addition to a broad medical background, dentists study oral anatomy, facial structure, general and oral pathology, psychology and dental materials.

Apple Valley dentists, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella have taken up “myth busting” within their Dakota Dental Apple Valley Family Dentistry blog.

Dakota Dental Highlights Hidden Benefits Of Professional Teeth Whitening

From now through August, Dakota Dental is highlighting not only the cosmetic dentistry benefits of professional teeth whitening, but the overall health benefits as well at its Apple Valley Dental Clinic.

Often considered only a cosmetic dentistry treatment, Dakota Dental clinic is informing their community of the dental, oral and related health benefits also associated with professional teeth whitening.

In addition to the esthetic benefits of an attractive appearance and increased self confidence, professional teeth whitening gel has also been proven to kill the bacteria that cause gum disease as well as those that cause tooth decay. Patients who take advantage of Dakota Dental’s professional teeth whitening services also have healthier teeth and are less likely to suffer from gum disease.

Ample research suggests a link between gum disease and health concerns such as cardiovascular problems, stroke, bacterial pneumonia and increased risk during pregnancy.

Dakota Dental To Host Invisalign Event – Free Ipad or $500 off…

Dakota Dental Apple Valley Family Dentistry will host an Invisalign Special Event on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

As an awarded Preferred Provider for Invisalign, the doctors at Apple Valley Dental Clinic, Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, will educate individuals about invisible braces, the treatment process and the orthodontic issues that Invisalign corrects.

As an alternative orthodontic treatment to invasive traditional metal braces, Invisalign is successful in correcting overly spaced teeth, crowded teeth, crossbite, underbite, overbite and a full spectrum of orthodontic problems. The doctors at Dakota Dental Apple Valley Family Dentistry have been uniquely certified to administer this treatment using a series of custom made aligners that gently shift teeth into place based on the exact movements Dr. Wakefield and Dr. Isabella plan out for each individual patient. No metal brackets or wires are used which can cut and irritate cheeks and gum tissue. Aesthetically, Invisalign provides orthodontic patients with an invisible teeth straightening option.

The American Dental Association advocates straightening teeth for important health benefits including preventing periodontal problems, improving dental hygiene and overall health. Dakota Dental Apple Valley family dentistry states that too many individuals sacrifice these important dental health benefits along with the increased self confidence of a properly aligned smile because of the invasive and painful prospect of traditional metal braces. Dakota Dental Center hopes that in increasing awareness of alternative orthodontic treatments such as invisible braces, individuals can experience and enjoy full dental health and feel good about their appearance.

The Invisalign Special Event held at Dakota Dental Apple Valley family dentistry on April 26th will include information regarding new orthodontic options, personal orthodontic consultations, information about complimentary professional teeth whitening and the option to begin treatment that day with the added benefit of receiving your choice of an iPad, iPod Touch or a reduced Invisalign fee.

Dr. Shelley Wakefield and Dr. Bennett Isabella, serve the southern Minneapolis/Saint Paul suburbs through Dakota Dental Apple Valley family dentistry. Located in the Pennock Professional Building in Apple Valley, Minnesota, Dakota Dental Center provides comprehensive dental work including, but not limited to, preventative dental services, restorative dental procedures, dental implants, periodontal disease treatment, dentistry for kids, low anxiety dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and dental emergency services.
