We love to see our patients involved in sports! Physical activity is good for your heart, and helps to build strong bones.
However, some sports can put your teeth at risk. Everyone knows a hockey player or two who are missing some front teeth! You should be wearing a mouthguard if you play any of the following sports: hockey, football, wrestling, soccer, and other contact sports. Remember, injuries do not only happen on the playing field. Most injuries actually happen during practices or in your driveway or yard, just playing with friends! The mouthguard cannot protect you if it is in your sports bag, so put it in, even for practice!
While you may not consider the following sports to be particularly dangerous for teeth, I have seen kids lose teeth while: swimming (watch that you don’t slip and hit your teeth on the concrete edge while climbing out!), skate boarding, rollerblading, jumping on beds and bike riding. While it may not be common or “cool” to wear a mouthguard while on your bike, you use a helmet to protect your brain, why not wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth?
We can make a custom mouthguard for you which is tight fitting and comfortable to wear. It can be made in a variety of colors, including you school colors!
